I attended a webinar on bicycle network design put on by the Dutch Cycling Embassy. One of their basic requirements for bike routes is directness, with consideration of the “Detour Factor.” If you make people go 20% out of their way, then the route doesn’t meet their standard.

Requirement 2: Directness Two important components: • Distance (shortest route possible) • Time (quicker than by car, priority at traffic lights) • Detour factor < 1.2 • All components of the network • Corridors • Links • Intersections
